The Capital of Texas Zoo

We took the kids to the Capital of Texas Zoo last weekend. I was told that it was a ghetto zoo, but I did not believe the naysayers because of the big, beautiful sign on the highway. We turned off of the highway and headed towards the zoo. As we drove, we passed several double-wides, a couple of dump of the months and one prominently displayed stone Jesus. Chris thought that the "zoo people" were just trying to get us off the main road to rob us. When we finally got to the zoo, we turned off on a dirt road and parked in a dusty parking lot. It was definitely not the San Antonio Zoo. Nothing was paved and most of the animals were not identified. You know you are not in a "real" zoo when one of the major exhibits is the Guinnea Pig exhibit ("Hey Jackson and Audrey, Look It's Lenny from the Wonder Pets!"). The nice thing about the zoo is that it is not crowded and you can get closer to the animals then the regular zoo. The kids had a good time and the weather was nice, so overall it was a pretty nice afternoon.

Heehee it is totally a ghetto zoo. I agree. My favorite exhibit was the whistling/talking parrot. :-) The Austin Zoo is a little more impressive but not as impressive as the San Antonio and Dallas ones for sure.

The kids were totally confused by the bird that kept saying "Hello!".

You really ought to check out the Abilene Zoo. It's small, but they have a really cool bridge that you can walk over and feed the giraffes from above. It's a great stop on the way to Lubbock...if you're ever on your way to Lubbock! HA!
